Meh.

Wunderlist is a slick, great-looking task management program for Mac and Windows. While the development team have said that a Linux version is on the way, I couldn’t wait and decided to see if wine would run it… and it does!

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Make sure Wine is installed. If it isn’t, open a terminal, and type:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wine

2. Download the bundled version of Wunderlist. Open a terminal, and cd to the directory where you saved it. Say for example:

cd Downloads

3. Once you are at the download directory, type in the following:

wine msiexec -i wunderlist-1.0.0-win-bundled.msi

Note: make sure that the filename in what you type is the exact same filename as the file you downloaded.

You should be able to get Wunderlist up and running with no hiccups. The only setback I ran into had to do with the complete lack of labels on some of the pop-up dialog box buttons (especially on the very first screen post-installation where you are asked to sign up for an account or postpone it for later - you can use it without an account) , but beyond that, everything works.

Wunderlist is a wonderfully made program, and while it’s up and running on Ubuntu using wine, I’d still love to get my hands on a native version.

Update: The 6Wunderkinder team has given a release date for the Linux version of Wunderlist: Early December!

Update 2: They 6Wunderkinder team has run into some problems, and the Linux version seems unlikely for this year.

Update 3: The 6Wunderkinder team has said that the reason why the Linux version of Wunderlist has been delayed is a problem with Titanium, the software they use to make Wunderlist available on Windows and OS X. Once that issue gets addressed, the native Linux version should follow through. No mention of a date yet, though (I can’t wait!).

Some odd bits and pieces:

• If you forget your password and use the password recovery feature, make sure you type the password you receive in your email into the password field in Wunderlist. Copy-pasting doesn’t work (at least for me, it didn’t) for some reason, and I sat in front of my PC slack-jawed until I tried it. It was so simple I had to smack myself on the head for not thinking of it sooner.
• Sometimes when syncing, tasks get doubled (not sure if this happens on Windows or Mac installations).
• New features added (share via cloud, email, add notes, print), but the version number has remained the same for the bundled version: 1.0.0.  Haven’t thus seen nor tried said new features.
• Still no visible text in the dialog box buttons. Not really sure, but I’m guessing it’s an issue with wine.
• This made my day.
